This warm weather is a good reminder that it’s time for you veggie gardeners to start thinking about what you’ll plant this season. Late February and early March are when some of the first plants can start going into the ground – beans, radishes, spinach, onions, and lettuce, among others. The book Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades is an excellent resource for gardening in our specific region. While most gardening books talk about East Coast gardening, this one discusses planning and planting for our very unique environment characterized by rich soil, tons of rain and mild winters.
Some folks in the neighborhood have talked about starting a produce exchange for when the bounty is too, well, bountiful. Would you be interested in participating in this? Do you have ideas for how to organize a smooth system? There is an abundance of the freshest foods that go uneaten in Woodlawn because we simply can’t keep up. Trust me, I’m speaking from (seemingly-unfathomable) experience when I tell you that sometimes you really don’t want to eat another strawberry. Do you want some of mine?
E-mail us at Website //at// GoWoodlawn.com and we’ll get something going.

I would love a gardeners veggie swap. Maybe we could plan a Saturday morning in the summer for this?
I, too, would enjoy to swap veggies, starts, seeds, knowledge, etc. Saturday’s would work for me, too. There is also a group in NE Portland working on food security issues. I think the next meeting is coming up. Check out Alberta St. Coop’s website.
Hello,
I would love to organize a neighborhood plant swap this fall. Spring is often too wet and too busy. We could sponsor the event at the Woodlawn community garden. I propose late September we have a Plant and Pie swap. Everyone can bring either a plant or a pie or both to share with others.
If anyone is interested in participating in this let me know and I will help get the word out.
