THERE IS NO LIMIT TO WHAT WE CAN DO
===================================
Woodlawn has been a great neighborhood for many, many years as is
evidenced by the welcoming neighbors, the presence of long-time
residents on the Woodlawn Board and the reduction of gang activity in
the park (a major effort by our dedicated neighbors years ago).

On my block, neighbors are sharing ideas, foods, projects and tools.
As the economy struggles and the world starts to feel disconnected
from our natural roots, we need our neighbors more than ever. What
better a resource than the one that is right next door.

From the success of the NE Portland Tool Library, an effort largely
organized by Woodlawn neighbors, to the plans for the open space at
13th and Holman, there is no limit to what we as a neighborhood can
accomplish.

It’s spring, a time for a fresh outlook on the world around you.
Share your dreams, hopes and ideas with your neighbors. Attend
neighborhood meetings (3rd Wednesdays, 7pm, at the Woodlawn Community
Resource Center, 2nd floor of Woodlawn Methodist Church, 15th and
Dekum). Chances are, your neighbors want what you want, and together
we can make it happen.

Let’s keep on making Woodlawn great, and BIG THANKS to the long-time
residents who have set our neighborhood on the positive path it is on
today.

Way to go, Woodlawn neighbors!

TRIMET CUTS
===========
An important note from Jon Joseph at TriMet….

“As you may know, due to the weak economy, TriMet is facing a $13.5
million budget shortfall which is forcing us to make a 5% cut in
programs and services agency-wide. After taking a number of steps to
reduce costs and improve efficiency, we proposed service reductions
and discontinuations effective September 2009.”

The public meetings have passed, but you can still weigh in via the
comment line. Read more:

SUNDAY PARKWAYS
===============
Last summer Portland hosted the first Sunday Parkways event, a day
when a looped route of streets was open for people to enjoy without
interference from cars. Modeled after the weekly Ciclovias street
openings in Bogota, Columbia, the event was so successful that this
year there will be three Sunday Parkways: June 21 North Portland, July
19 Northeast Portland and August 16 Southeast Portland.

These events present a wonderful opportunity for you and your family
to get out and be active right in your own neighborhood. You will be
able to walk, bike run, roll, meet your neighbors and enjoy
entertainment in the parks and along the routes.

Those the NE route won’t exactly come into Woodlawn, it does
encompass Ainsworth and there is an activity spot (food vendors, music
and activities) at Alberta Park.

GARDENS GALORE + FREE SEEDS
===========================
It seems that every block of Woodlawn has a yard with a
newly-constructed raised bed or freshly dug garden plot. That’s
exciting to see. The merits of home gardening are many. Gardening is a
great way to calm your mind, you’re likely to get to know your
neighbors as you weed in the front yard, produce grown industrially
lacks flavor and important nutrients, you can save a lot of money by
growing in your yard, you can use your water to grow food instead of
grass and it’s super convenient to be able to prepare dinner from the
front yard instead of driving to the store.

The NE Portland Tool Library (housed at Redeemer Church, 20th and
Killingsworth) added a seed library to their cache of resources. So
before you purchase seeds from the store, check out what the seed
library has available. Chances are you’ll find heirloom varieties of
all your veggie favorites, organic options and varieties that will do
particularly well in our unique Northwest climate.

Over and out,
Team Woodlawn
