Everyone is excited about Parkways coming through Woodlawn and we are too. We want to say hi to folks passing through Woodlawn, make them feel at home and share with them what a great neighborhood we have. However, we need volunteers to make this happen.

The Woodlawn Neighborhood Association is asking for a simple two-hour committment to sit at the WNA table.

There are two shifts we need to fill: 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Who is going to jump on board and help out the neighborhood? If you’re willing, please  contact Sheila at kirkman953@yahoo.com or call her 503-308-0582.

Thanks.

The construction of the pocket park at 13th and NE Holman is underway beginning in late August. The cement work and then planting will last through October.

It’s been a topic of discussion amongst neighbors for years and now the Portland Parks and Recreation department, the Portland Bureau of Transportation, as well as the Urban Forester and other departments are all working together coordinating and finalizing work on the project. The goal is to finish the street work, which will create sidewalks connecting the park with the surrounding neighborhood and the bike corridor by Sunday Parkways, Sept. 25.

The park will eventually feature a kiosk, a bike rack, a drinking fountain, built-in benches and bio-swales to handle the sewer overflow. The surrounding streets will also be given improved crossing, which will have ramps to make the park accessible to a greater range of people.

There will be some volunteer opportunities to help plant the park, both at Sunday Parkways and with the Portland Park and Recreations department. Look for a flier or on the Portland Park and Recreation web page if you are interested in being part of the planting project in October.

There will be disruptions in bike, pedestrian and car traffic during the on-going project. Please be careful when traveling down Durham, 13th, Holman and 12th — especially if you are traveling at night!

Sunday-Parkways-PNGWe’re excited to announce that Sunday Parkways is coming to Woodlawn park this year, Sept. 25 from noon to 5 p.m. and we’d love to see some neighborhood volunteers.

Sunday Parkways is connects neighborhoods and people: walkers, runners, bicyclists, seniors, adults and children all enjoying streets filled with  performers, physical activities and food. The 6-8 miles routes give neighbors a chance to explore area parks and listen to great music, and try new activities. Last year about 91,000 people came  out and enjoyed the festivities at the five Parkways events.

The Woodlawn Neighborhood Association is joining in on the festivities and we’re looking for neighbors who want to spend an hour or two at the WNA table meeting neighbors and other visitors.

Our volunteer coordinator Sheila is waiting to hear from you. Please send her an email if you’re interested in helping out. Her email address is kirkman953@yahoo.com.

Either way, we hope to see you there.

(From Laura Demeri)

Hello Woodlawn Neighbors,

Please join us this Saturday in beautifying the neighborhood with our scheduled tree planting with Friends of Trees.  The activity is planned around family and neighbors who come together to make the day memorable.  There will be plenty to do and the more volunteers the better.

Many friends and local businesses within the Woodlawn/Vernon/Concordia areas will be providing breakfast, lunch, and snacks. We will have a special opportunity to sample some desserts made by local pastry chef, Gretchen Glatte, who, along with Matt Busetto (co-owner of the Firehouse restaurant), will be opening the new Woodlawn Coffee and Pastry shop next to Good Neighbor Pizzeria this Spring.

We will meet for breakfast and assignments by 8:30 AM at the Redeemer Lutheran Church located at the Southwest corner of 19th and Killingsworth.  Please dress for planting trees and be prepared for rain.  Bring your own tools if you can (make sure they are ID’d).

If you have questions or are able to donate a dish, please contact Laura Demeri at 503.285.5005 or Laura //at// BelieveMovementStudio.com.

Thank you – Laura

Sunday Parkways is a day when the city opens a loop of streets so people may freely spend the day walking, skateboarding, rollerblading, wheelchairing, biking and strolling along.   Though there won’t be a Sunday Parkways coming through Woodlawn, it will pass right near us along Ainsworth and we have been encouraged to get involved.  Below is a note from one of the coordinators:
I wanted to invite you and any of your interested neighborhood residents to our brainstorming cafe.  Vernon neighborhood is hosting a Sunday Parkways Cafe on Saturday, March 21st, 9-11 am, at the Redeemer Lutheran Church (5431 NE 20th @Killingsworth). We would love for you to help us brainstorm ideas for activities in the parks and along the route, music, food vendors and anything else that would make this a great event.

The Northeast Portland route will link Alberta, Fernhill and Wilshire Parks. The date of the actual event is July 19th, 9am – 4pm. We will be sending out an invitation to register as a volunteer as the event gets closer – we need about 400 people!

Hope to see you on March 21st. Please feel free to pass this email along.
Cheers,

Janis McDonald

Tonight, February 18th, is our monthly General Meeting in the Woodlawn Community Resource Center at the Woodlawn Methodist Church, 7pm. The building is on Dekum at 15th. Enter the WEST entrance and head up the stairs.

General Meetings are a great time to meet your neighbors, present ideas/concerns and hear about upcoming projects in your neighborhood, like the monthly square dances at the Village Ballroom or the Friends of Trees tree planting. These are casual, social get-togethers.

General Meetings happen every third Wednesday, same time and same place.

We hope to see you there!
