From Concerned Parents for Clean Air and the DEQ. There will be a meeting to talk about Industrial Emissions, the impact on our neighborhoods and schools, and the monitoring of these emissions (or lack thereof).
This issue is of particular importance in our neighborhoods because during the winter months our air shed flows from the west to the east. This brings the bad air toxins and heavy metals from the NW Portland Industrial District to our N/NE neighborhoods. (Not to mention that our neighborhoods contain and border major corridors like MLK, I-5, I-84, and the Portland Highway!).
Please attend this meeting if you want to hear more about the state of our air, connect with our neighbors in NW who are doing work around this issue (particularly with the schools), and to hear from the DEQ. Read the rest of this entry »

The Woodlawn Spring Clean Up is Saturday, May 23rd at HenryV Events, 6360 NE MLK Blvd. (at Holman). Volunteers are needed to ensure this neighborhood-run event goes smoothly. Positions include making signs in advance and working at the event.
If you are among the first 15 to volunteer for at least two hours, and you can bring a carload of your stuff for free. You’ll also get continental breakfast, drinks, snacks, and pizzas. This is a great opportunity to meet neighbors. And if you’re a scrapper and re-user, you will get to dig through the bins before they are hauled away.
To sign up, contact Jan Clutter: 503-327-5146 or JanClutter23 //at// yahoo.com

Let’s face it, it rains a lot here. And then in the summer, we spend out time watering our gardens with fresh water from the ground. With rain barrels, you can harvest the winter rains and make use of them all summer long. Barrels are a smart way to water and they can help reduce your water bill.
The Northeast Portland Tool Library is offering a workshop on building and installing rain barrels on May 16th. Registration is required; space is limited. For more information contact NEPortlandToolLibrary //at// gmail.com.

A group of Woodlawn neighbors has come together to discuss plans to revitalize the underused “pocket park” at the corner of Holman, 13th, and Durham. There’s been some good work done and some great ideas generated but now…..WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! This project will only be successful if we get help, ideas, and creativity from a wide range of our neighbors in Woodlawn. Please join us in creating a fun and beautiful park that we can all be proud of.
WHERE: The park at Holman, 13th and Durham
WHEN: Saturday, April 25th, 11am to 1pm

===================================
THERE IS NO LIMIT TO WHAT WE CAN DO
===================================
Woodlawn has been a great neighborhood for many, many years as is
evidenced by the welcoming neighbors, the presence of long-time
residents on the Woodlawn Board and the reduction of gang activity in
the park (a major effort by our dedicated neighbors years ago).
On my block, neighbors are sharing ideas, foods, projects and tools.
As the economy struggles and the world starts to feel disconnected
from our natural roots, we need our neighbors more than ever. What
better a resource than the one that is right next door.
From the success of the NE Portland Tool Library, an effort largely
organized by Woodlawn neighbors, to the plans for the open space at
13th and Holman, there is no limit to what we as a neighborhood can
accomplish.
It’s spring, a time for a fresh outlook on the world around you.
Share your dreams, hopes and ideas with your neighbors. Attend
neighborhood meetings (3rd Wednesdays, 7pm, at the Woodlawn Community
Resource Center, 2nd floor of Woodlawn Methodist Church, 15th and
Dekum). Chances are, your neighbors want what you want, and together
we can make it happen.
Let’s keep on making Woodlawn great, and BIG THANKS to the long-time
residents who have set our neighborhood on the positive path it is on
today.
Way to go, Woodlawn neighbors!

An important note from Jon Joseph at TriMet….
As you may know, due to the weak economy, TriMet is facing a $13.5 million budget shortfall which is forcing us to make a 5% cut in programs and services agency-wide. After taking a number of steps to reduce costs and improve efficiency, we proposed service reductions and discontinuations effective September 2009. We held open houses in February and March to obtain direct feedback from our customers on the proposed service cuts.

From the North East Portland Tool Library:
The North East Portland Tool Library is now 236+ members strong (and growing every week.) We have 637+ tools (also growing every week.) We just started a free seed library, open and available to our members, and anyone else who is interested in planting veggies and flowers.
We recently received our first grant ($4,400) from the North East Coalition of Neighborhoods and our first large private donation ($2,200). We have already spent much of these monies on the tools most requested by our members.
The advisory council of NEPTL is seeking 8-11 interested members who would be willing to commit to a 2 ½ hour shift once a month to become volunteer tool librarians (we are all volunteers at NEPTL). Duties would include checking tools in/out, signing up new members/ etc. We will have a training for tool librarians this Saturday March 21st from 8:40am-12:30 pm (the first 3 to respond to this email). In fact, we really need a portion of these hours covered by volunteers this Saturday, so if you have been wanting to get involved, NOW is the time to jump in! Working shifts is relatively easy, and a nice way to get to know your NE neighbors.
