Sunday-Parkways-PNGWe’re excited to announce that Sunday Parkways is coming to Woodlawn park this year, Sept. 25 from noon to 5 p.m. and we’d love to see some neighborhood volunteers.

Sunday Parkways is connects neighborhoods and people: walkers, runners, bicyclists, seniors, adults and children all enjoying streets filled with  performers, physical activities and food. The 6-8 miles routes give neighbors a chance to explore area parks and listen to great music, and try new activities. Last year about 91,000 people came  out and enjoyed the festivities at the five Parkways events.

The Woodlawn Neighborhood Association is joining in on the festivities and we’re looking for neighbors who want to spend an hour or two at the WNA table meeting neighbors and other visitors.

Our volunteer coordinator Sheila is waiting to hear from you. Please send her an email if you’re interested in helping out. Her email address is kirkman953@yahoo.com.

Either way, we hope to see you there.

Station14In remembrance of the events of 9/11/01, all 30 Portland Fire stations will be open to the public.  Stop by the local station at 1905 NE Killingsworth between 8am and 5pm for a time of reflection and remembrance with firefighters.  Participants can write messages that will become part of a large memory book.

While there you can pick up a Visible Address Portland Kit. which will aid firefighters in serving the community.  Kits contain door hangers for canvassers to hang on front doors of homes where there is no visible address, encouraging homeowners to take action and make their address visible.

Information about this project will be presented at next week’s general meeting.

Environmental Services, the Bureau of Transportation, and the Regional Arts and Cultural Council are planning a green street facility on the southwest side of NE Durham at the corner of Dekum. The project will incorporate a landscaped area, bicycle parking on a concrete pad, and an art installation mounted on the bike parking structure. They are just about ready to get started on this project.

The soil and plants in green street facilities filter pollutants from stormwater runoff and reduce stormwater volume in the city sewer system. Portland is building green street facilities throughout the city to manage stormwater.

Normal work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The project will take three to six weeks to complete.

REDUCING THE ‘SUMMER SLIDE’

It is well known that many children, especially those from families with limited financial and transportation resources, lose about 2 months of schooling during each summer vacation. That loss compounds year after year ultimately leaving the children many months or years behind their more affluent peers.

Based on feedback from the City of Portland’s outreach, this project will move forward for the approval of the City Traffic Engineer and the Transportation Director.

The City of Portland has indicated that the future maintenance and design of the pocket park improvement at NE 13th Avenue will require further discussions with the neighborhood.

On the corner of Northeast 13th Avenue and Holman Street there is a tiny park. It houses one pine tree, a bench, a broken sprinkler system, and an odd play structure/sculpture that some call the “horse saddle.” But this unassuming and often neglected little patch of soil and concrete has been the centerpiece of a neighborhood caring, protecting, and providing for itself one little block at a time.

Portland Sunday Parkways is a festival that brings the entire community together along traffic-free streets. Over 125,000 people will walk, jog, bike and stroll together on routes in NE, N, SE, E and NW Portland. The first event for this summer is on Sunday, May 16 in NE Portland and it’s coming through Woodlawn!

The support of the entire community is needed to make Sunday Parkways possible. Over 300 volunteers assist with project such as park set up and roving bike mechanics at each event. The greatest need is for Intersection Superheros: the essential volunteers who staff every intersection along the course for safety reasons.

There are two cool ways to get involved. If you’re thinking of just yourself or you plus friends, you may volunteer by yourself or with friends and family to throw an intersection party, decorate it, make it your own, have fun.

The other option is to bring your group (organization, cause, riding club, etc) together to host an intersection and promote your organization. You get to “own” the intersection, decorate it, promote your cause, and have fun. With 25,000 people coming right past your station, this is a great opportunity to get the word out.

Check out the schedule and plan for a summer full of fun, traffic-free Sunday Parkways events!
