May 15: How do we stop violence?

Join the Portland NE Neighborhood Violence Prevention Committee to learn about current trends in violence affecting youth, crime prevention tips, and information. Help determine next steps for keeping communities safe. Come to the first meeting, and be part of the solution!

May 16: Disaster Preparedness Plan – your input is needed!

In recent months, a team of urban planning students at PSU has been working with the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods to develop a Community Disaster Preparedness Plan. One action we have identified is locating community information hubs in each neighborhood. If traditional communication methods were to fail after a disaster these hubs will help facilitate the flow of information between neighborhoods and ultimately from the neighborhood and coalition to the city and beyond. We have developed criteria for siting these hubs, but it relies on local knowledge only those familiar with the neighborhood can provide.

Please come join us at the May 16th Woodlawn Neighborhood Association meeting at Woodlawn Methodist Church where we will begin identifying possible hub locations. Your input is needed!

Would you like to get involved and benefit your neighborhood? Woodlawn Neighborhood Association needs more board members! You would attend two meetings per month (one general and one board) and serve on one or more committees (Sunday Parkways or other events and issues) . We also need a board secretary, who takes accurate notes of the meetings. Please help!

Get ready for the August Graffitti Clean-Up!

The City of Portland Graffiti Abatement Program will sponsor a Saturday morning graffiti cleanup in Woodlawn on Saturday, August 25th. They need your help! This will be a combined effort by City-contracted graffiti removal crews, and a minimum of 10 volunteers from the community.

Prior to the cleanup date, residents/businesses will be asked to survey their area and compile a list of sites that have been vandalized by graffiti and then to submit the list to Graffiti Abatement Volunteer Coordinator at least a week ahead of the event.

The Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods and Concordia University are co-hosting a mayoral and city council candidates’ forum focused on education on Thursday, March 22nd, at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm.

We need your help! Just like when Portlanders first started recycling, it takes time to create and establish new routines for households. Portlanders are doing a great job adapting to the new Curbside Collection Service with food scrap composting, the change to weekly pick up of the green compost cart, and every-other-week garbage collection. The City wants to help Portlanders adapt and to answer questions about the changes.

Woodlawn Neighborhood Association has stepped up to help mobilize volunteers to go door-to-door to answer questions about changes to the curbside collection system, to promote composting, and to earn money for Woodlawn. Days and times for canvassing will be picked by the group. Training, safety vests, maps, walking lists, and literature are provided. Anyone 18 years or older can volunteer.

The program runs through March 13th through May 19th in Woodlawn. For more details, check out their poster. Please contact Anjala, the Woodlawn organizer, to sign up!

The Woodlawn Neighborhood Association board of directors meets the first Wednesday of every month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The agenda for these meetings typically focuses on planning, budgeting, and community projects.
