ACTIVITY AT THE FIREHOUSE
==========================
Dekum Family Health is fully open and operational on the second floor
of the historic firehouse. The health center is offering health and
wellness classes, such as Quigong, an ancient practice similar to Tai
Chi for cultivating physical, mental, and emotional well being. Dekum
Family Health also offers acupuncture and Chinese medicine, including
Chinese and western herbs, massage, diet therapy and natural family
healthcare.

For more information on their hours, services and classes, call
503.954.1697.

FRESH PRODUCE COMES TO KING
=============================
Fresh organic produce and other foods may be available as early as
May at a new Sunday farmers market planned for our adjacent
neighborhood, King. An agreement is in the works for the Portland
Farmers Market to operate the King Farmers Market in partnership with
the Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods. The Portland Farmers Market
operates four of the city’s 14 markets, including the largest at
Portland State University. The only other Sunday market is in
Hillsdale.

The location is not yet known though one possibility is to locate the
market at or near King Elementary School at NE 7th Ave., south of
Alberta St.

“The successful markets that come to life are driven by neighborhoods
or the community,” says Ann Forsthoefel, Portland Farmers Market
executive director. “We want every market to take on the flavor of its
neighborhood.” You need look no further than the nearby Hollywood
Farmers Market for a great example of this.

WHAT’S TO COME ON DEKUM
========================
As you’ve probably noticed, there is a great deal of growth happening
on Dekum. The Woodlawn neighborhood had the foresight to developed a
vision plan for neighborhood growth. The plan was facilitated by the
City of Portland’s planning bureau and involved extensive planning,
large neighborhood meetings with over 100 people in attendance, and a
neighborhood-wide survey. The result is the Woodlawn Triangle Master
Plan and it can be downloaded from our website.

==> VIEW THE PLAN: http://GoWoodlawn.com/?p=22

While we can’t say for sure what all is to come on Dekum, we
neighbors were at least a part of the process. You can continue to be
clued in to the changes that are happening by walking the street,
meeting building owners if you see them (introduce yourself as a
neighbor, ask questions – it’s your neighborhood!) and attending our
General Meetings (third Wednesdays). When you can’t make meetings,
talk to your neighbors, ask questions and read these newsletters. Stay
engaged and together we can make sure our neighborhood continues to be
the great place our neighbors have worked so hard to make it.

The building on the corner of Dekum and Durham is the historic bakery
and is being reconstructed to accommodate several businesses and
housing. Businesses have not been selected. Other buildings are still
under construction. Some have lost their funding and halted their
projects.

We’ll do our best to keep you posted on any activity that we know
about, and please keep us posted!

SQUARE DANCES IN WOODLAWN
============================
Yes, the old dances of yore are making a come back. Why? Well, the
people who attended the inaugural dance at the Village Ballroom last
month said it was tons of fun. And who can argue with that?

Plus, no special dance skills are required, so this is great fun for
people who are usually shy on the dance floor.

Each month’s dance benefits a local non-profit organization. The next
dance schedule is February 23 and it benefits the Portland Fruit Tree
Project. The bar opens at 6:30 and dancing is from 7-9pm. There is a
sliding scale entry fee and no one is turned away for lack of funds.

In the early days of Woodlawn, the neighborhood held famous dances in
the Ballroom. It is exciting to see a resurgence of activity in that
building!
