In August 2021, a welcome diversion from all of our pandemic blues and blahs was strolling through the pop-up arboretum that appeared in Woodlawn Park. Maps were provided and there was a scavenger hunt as well—what better way to get to know the trees that make our little corner of nature here in Woodlawn so shady and beautiful? Every one of Portland’s parks has its own unique assortment of trees, each with a story to tell. For the past two years, parks throughout the city have been transformed into arboreta full of educational, enjoyable, and immersive experiences. With more than 300 different kinds of trees in our parks, no two Pop-Ups are the same. Thanks to the folks at Urban Forestry for including Woodlawn in this fun and, at the time, safe outdoor nature adventure.
