In June 2019, thirty-two volunteers helped map, measure, and identify the trees of Woodlawn Park. In total, 299 trees from 48 different species were recorded at the park. Then the Urban Forestry folks at Portland Parks and Recreation created an amazing virtual tour of the trees that are in Woodlawn Park including a tree inventory, maps, and superb photographs of each genus and species they catalogued—evergreen and deciduous trees. The virtual tour also highlights the history of the Woodlawn neighborhood and the creation of the park itself back in 1975.
In 2000, local artist Anne Storrs created “Buckeye Bench” near the park playground, a stone seating area inspired by the two yellow buckeye trees (Aesculus flava) that still grow in the park today. They are the largest examples of this species in any of Portland’s parks.
